It’s all who you know…

My dad sat me down and asked me the question that all twenty-somethings dread, where do you see yourself in five years? My response, ugh… I don’t know, proved to be the wrong answer. Shocking!

He proceeded to tell me that one of his client’s had worked in New York City at “some marketing firm” and that I should talk to her. He thought she might have some advice for me. So, I emailed her and found out that the “marketing firm” he spoke of was Ogilvy and Mather

This past weekend I met with Linda and talked to her about her career. Her advice was to start off as a generalist and get more specific as your career progresses. That way you can get a taste for what you like and what you don’t like. She also told me that if I wanted a job I could stay in Vermont but if I wanted a career I would have to move (for now). Which sort of gave me a reality check. She also told me she would send my resume and put me in contact with whoever I wanted in her rolodex (which is pretty impressive).

I was very fortunate to have met with Linda. Talking with her got me even more excited about my future. I can’t wait to see what happens next. So, if you have the opportunity to make a new connection, take it. You never know who that person may know.
